Lebbeus Tubbs, who married Hannah Middaugh in 1824, settled in Southport near his father on a small farm, where was born to him nine children. During the summer he worked his farm, and in spring and fall piloted arks and rafts of lumber and salt from Elmira down the Chemung and Susquehanna Rivers for many miles, and many times walked forty miles a day, for three or four successive days to get to his home again. Finding it hard work, and a large family growing around him, he conceived the idea of going west; and in the year 1846, he, in company with his brother-in-law, Almond C. Kenyon, went to Michigan and located one hundred and sixty acres of land in the township of Holly, Oakland Co. In 1847 he and his family left Southport; going by canal boat to Buffalo, from Buffalo to Detroit by steamboat, From Detroit to Pontiac by rail and thence to Holly by the then, most commun mode of traveling--oxen and wagon, arriving the first of September and moving into a log house, near the land previously selected. His first work was to erect a big house for himself, and then came the long and arduous task of clearing the heavily timbered land. It was a hard struggle at first, as the entire family were afflicted with fever, ague and other ailments, incendental to a new country, but with the help of his boys, he soon had a comfortable home. In 1850, after four years of western life, his wife died, but his daughters became his house keepers, and he remained on the farm. In 1864, his son-in-law, Martin B. Burgess purchased the homestead, although Lebbeus remained with him until 1875, when he went to the township of Independence, to live with his daughter Caroline. He removed with her to Waterford, Oakland Co., in 1878, where he remained until his death, beloved by his children, and, we believe, without an enemy.

Caroline Tubbs, daughter of Lebbeus Tubbs, married Morris Green in the year 1847; and began housekeeping in a log house, near her father. Her furniture consisted only of such pieces as were absolutely necessary; and her cooking was done over a fireplace. But it did not require as much to insure happiness in those early days as it does at the present time; and they were well contented with what they had. In 1848, their only child, William J., was born. In 1850 they bought one hundred and twenty acres of land in the township of Independence, Oakland Co., whither they went, accompanied by Harriet, third sister of Mrs. Green. Their new home was a wilderness, on which a spot had to be cleared before a dwelling could be erected. As Mr. Green had come to the state when a lad of seventeen, some thirteen years previous, both he and his wife were familiar with life in a new country, and with good health, willing hands, and perseverance, the acres of woods gradually melted away, and productive fields took their place. With economy and untiring industry, they were enabled, as the years passed away, to add to their acres of land, and comforts of home life. After the death of William Tubbs, Mrs. Green's eldest brother, they took his youngest son, Samuel, who made his home with them until about fourteen years of age. In 1878 they moved to Waterford, Oakland Co., where they still reside.
